BEGINNINGS
Far from the filth of the Walking Ape
Far from the touch of any hand
Lies a place where the maw of the earth still gapes
And fire still burns in the bones of the land
Here, in a realm now veiled by time,
The forces that bore us run, unbound
The verse of the world remains unrhymed
And the mountains’ heartbeats blackly sound
Feel the power of wave and stone
At the shore where these crashing giants beach
Where the earth itself can creak and moan
And its terrors rise from the inky reach
A world of shadow, stone, and ice
Where every dawn is a millionth’s chance
And time is known by the cast of dice
And the spiraling sun must learn its dance
Yet here, where the wind can swirl the stars—
A tendril, a leaf, a hardy sprout
To calm the storm, and hide the scars
And cast the first of human doubt
