TROY

Here lies the grave of a prosperous realm
Haunted by ghosts in the smoke
And skeleton vessels, no one at their helms
The price of the will that they broke

Rust is the color of permanent stains
That dye the sand red by the shore
Marking the treasure that spilled for their gains
The death, and the sweat, and the gore

Is this the token the gods must demand,
The battle the raged for their child?
Could they have known what was dealt in the hand
Of a princess so lovely and mild?

In all of the city, there were but a few
Who weathered the storm that she brought
Watching the clouds as they billowed and brewed
And surged as the battle was fought

Over three thousand days, from the start ‘til the end
Ten years was the siege that they laid
An offer of peace, their king stooped to extend...
But the flag was an ivory-wrapped blade

Shrouded by darkness, the world lay sleeping
Safe in their delicate dreams
While deep in the nighttime, cold death was now creeping
Breaching their boundaries and seams

And then, with a passion of blood-lust desire
An army was poured through the gates
With torches they lighted the city’s great pyre
A shrine to the last of the Fates

Their gardens were burned, and the whithering buds
Fueled the blaze in its quest to destroy
O, how many seasons of rain was the blood
That flowed from the towers of Troy?
